Just a few thoughts on School Uniforms

January 30th, 2008 by admin

I saw a post somewhere the other day regarding school uniforms for kids. And I was amazed at the people's arguments who were against the idea of school uniforms? The entire argument was premised on the idea that what a person wears is the basis for their individuality? The first thing that “popped” into my head was, “how in the world can a person’s individuality be based on what everyone else is wearing?” Meaning, if everyone is wearing ripped jeans and cut off T-Shirts, where is the individuality? They went on to say that if students were made to wear uniforms in schools that this was taking away their/our freedom? There is a very slight element of truth in that idea that I won’t go into right now, but I believe that these people were more then just a little off course?

Individuality is based on what we are inside, not what we wear outside. The real basis for freedom is what we do with our minds; it is not what we are wearing! Only a shallow buffoon would believe that what we wear is what defines us a person or even makes us who we are! School is about learning it is about educating ourselves to make ourselves and our society a better place. It isn't about a fashion show, if you want proof that it isn’t what you wear that makes you who you are look at some of the great minds through out the ages. Their cognitive process’s made them some of the great thinkers, not what they were wearing?

We live in a world where so many people want to believe that just because a celebrity has a lot of money, and a shiny new car and they are having their picture taking all the time, that these people are being individuals. And even worse, they believe that these denizen’s of the glam and glitter land are independent thinkers and, if we do all of the things they do, we’ll be free and independent thinkers! They wear whatever someone tells them to wear when they go to the Oscar’s, or Emmys, or whatever pseudo contest that they attend. It has nothing to do with who they are, nor what they are as a person! This is where everyone has seem to forgotten who and what these people are, they are just people like you and I, they just have different jobs. The follow the trends like most everyone else, and most of them are no more individual thinkers nor are they representative of individuality then kids in any school U.S.A.

Individuality is based on what we are inside, not what we wear outside. This is the real basis for freedom and what we do with our minds; it is not what we are wearing! School is about learning it is about educating ourselves to make our society a better place. I am all for uniforms and I believe that if uniforms were the norm, then we may be able to benefit from at least two things. One – Our children would learn to focus on mental growth, and Two – It is likely that many of our social issues would at least fade away if not entirely go away. I understand that it would take a lot more then just uniforms, but think about this. If children were made to wear uniforms, think about how many potential “Body image” issues we may have? The idea of Anorexia and Bulimia are based on the idea of self image. If we lessen the idea of how one looks and focus on how one becomes an independent thinker, ideas as image morphing may begin to fade?
