Those of you planning to stalk the "Night Before the Night Before" party taking place at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel tomorrow night, might also want to check out another famous location just down the street. A few blocks away from the Regent is a little shop that might look familiar to Pretty Woman fans. It is the very same store where Julia Roberts, hoping to purchase a cocktail dress, gets snubbed by a group of snooty saleswomen. Later in the movie, Julia gets her revenge when she returns to the store, laden with shopping bags, and utters her famous line, "You guys work on commission, right? Big mistake! Big! Huge! I have to go shopping now!" In real life the shop is called Boulmiche and it looks pretty much the same as it did in Pretty Woman. If you would like to venture inside the store to do a little shopping yourself, don't be scared - in real life, the salespeople are very friendly. :) Boulmiche has become something of a celeb magnet as of late - attracting the likes of Jessica Simpson, Halle Berry and Eva Mendes, just to name a few.
As I mentioned in my last post, the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel is famous in and of itself - also from the movie Pretty Woman. It is the hotel where Julia Roberts and Richard Gere spend their six days together. Sadly, though, only the exterior of the Regent was used for filming; the interiors existed only on a Disney sound-stage. While the inside of the hotel is very beautiful and luxurious, I was disappointed when I visited it for the first time. I was really hoping that all of my Hollywood tour books were wrong and that at least part of the lobby had been used in the movie, but sadly that was not the case. Even the elevators were different. Even so, I would highly recommend visiting the Regent, tomorrow night or any other night, as it is truly a beautiful hotel. And you never know who might be hanging around. Last time I was there I saw Jake Gyllenhaal. :)

You will need:a pan,a tomato,5 slices of bacon,2-7 eggs,a cumberland sausage,a tin of baked beans,some magic mushrooms,a black pudding,hash browns(optional) and some bread(to toast),lard.
1: add roughly half a kilo of lard to the pan.
2:turn the gas to "high".
3:eventually the lard will go "on fire".This is the time to add all ingredients,quickly!
4:stir for an hour,or if you prefer well done,an hour and a quarter.
5:get the toast out that I should have mentioned earlier!
6:pour the pan onto toast and serve!

O filme é daqueles que os indies adoram, trilha bacaninha com Belle & Sebastian, Moldy Peaches e Cat Power, personagens freaks, diálogos espertos, elenco afinado. Mas não chega a merecer uma indicação ao Oscar de melhor filme(por mais convencional que a premiação seja...). Ellen Page(menina má.com) é uma pirralha que engravida aos 16 e resolve oferecer o bebê pra adoção. O filme é didático mas ao mesmo tempo politicamente incorreto. Só vendo pra entender... Por horas as personagens são bem interessantes, outras vezes ficam caricatas ao extremo, como o pai de Juno tão bonachão quanto o Homer Simpson e a bela Jennifer Garner fazendo caras a bocas (ela tá a cara da Julia Roberts!). Aaah, como estou me especializando em Literatura Comparada, comparar a Juno do filme com a mitológica seria um boa... Santo Esperma!
La guerra di Charlie Wilson è l'ultimo film di Mike Nichols, quello di Closer e soprattutto de Il Laureato. Sono andata a vederlo con le più rosee aspettative poichè il trailer era molto accattivante e faceva pregustare delle scenette davvero esilaranti, pur non essendo una commedia a tutti gli effetti. La campagna promozionale giocava proprio sul fatto che il film trattasse un argomento serio come quello dell'invasione sovietica dell'Afghanistan e il successivo intervento degli Stati Uniti in favore di quest'ultima - insomma un argomento in cui c'è poco da ridere - con i toni leggeri della commedia. Questo è vero fino ad un certo punto e Nichols riesce nell'obiettivo fino ad un certo punto.
Prima di passare alla recensione vera e propria i convenevoli sono d'obbligo, ecco la trama tratta da Film up:
La guerra di Charlie Wilson è la vera storia di una delle più importanti operazioni segrete della storia, condotta da un deputato di Houston amante della bella vita e delle buone cause, e da un coraggioso agente della CIA esperto di dure battaglie. Charlie Wilson (Hanks) è un deputato del Texas la cui gioviale personalità maschera in realtà una sagace mente politica, un forte sentimento patriottico e una profonda compassione per i più sfortunati. E, all'inizio degli anni '80, all'ombra dell'avanzata russa, i più sfortunati erano il popolo afgano. Joanne Herring (Roberts), una cara amica di Charlie, sua sostenitrice e talvolta sua amante, era una delle donne più ricche del Texas, nonché un'accanita anticomunista. Ritenendo che la reazione degli americani all'invasione dell'Afghanistan fosse alquanto "anemica", la donna incoraggiò Charlie a rifornire i Mujahideen - i leggendari combattenti per la libertà - delle armi e del denaro necessari per riuscire a sradicare gli aggressori russi dalla loro terra. Nel corso dei nove anni di occupazione dell' Afghanistan, gli Stati Uniti finanziarono manovre segrete contro i Sovietici, spendendo fino a 1 miliardo di dollari annui, e l'Armata Rossa alla fine si ritirò dall' Afghanistan.
Il film dura a malapena un'ora e trenta (un record oramai), non so se sia la durata il problema ma i tre personaggi principali soffrono comunque di una caratterizzazione approssimativa e superficiale, ogni personaggio ha una scena di presentazione, in cui vengono riassunti tutti i suoi vizi e virtù, riducendolo così ad una macchietta:
Nella prima scena viene presentato il Senatore Charlie Wilson (un Thom Hanks che indossa ancora la capigliatura di Langton) che gozzoviglia allegro in una jacuzzi con 2 spogliarelliste, una coniglietta di playboy e un arrivista di Hollywood che sniffa coca. Mentre è immerso nelle bollicine viene colpito da un servizio in tv sulla guerra in Afghanistan: l'uomo che si gode la bella vita ma attento a ciò che gli accade intorno.
Dopo una decina di minuti entra in scena il personaggio di Julia Roberts, Joanne Herring, una donna dell'alta società con abbastanza potere economico ed erotico per rigirarsi il senatore e, ah con un trucco ed una capigliatura orribili: la donna ricca e potente timorata di dio che ha qualche peccatuccio da confessare. Julia Roberts forse era l'attrice meno adatta per questo ruolo, che è brava si sa ma il trucco e il parrucco non hanno giovato al suo aspetto (cazzo quant'è invecchiata!) dalle linee già esili. Avrei visto meglio una Cate Blanchett, una Nicole Kidman che reggono ancora molto bene i primi piani. Non portate i bambini a vedere questo film che si spaventano! Sembra Crudelia! Ad esempio Merilyn Streep ne Il Diavolo veste Prada è luccicante, nonostante l'età la telecamera non le fa torto, mentre la Roberts...brrrrr
Ed infine, dopo poco viene presentato lui, Gust Avrakotos, il personaggio interpretato da Philip Seymour Hoffman il quale, per tutto il tempo del film, non ha fatto altro che rubare la scena agli altri 2, a ragione perchè gli è toccato il personaggio che suscita più simpatia e partecipazione nello spettatore, sicuramente quello meglio caratterizzato e più interessante da approfondire. Gust lo ritroviamo mentre sta affrontando un'accesa discussione col proprio capo, prima gli sciorina tutta la sua esperienza e preparazione e poi gli spacca la vetrata: l'agente buono e competente con un caratteraccio.
Nonostante questa pecca il film è comunque retto bene dalla bravura delle star presenti, è divertente quando è necessario che lo sia ed è serio quando i fatti lo richiedono, non vi aspettate il film che presenta il trailer, le scene più deliziose sono racchiuse tutte lì. Infatti l'irriverenza della pellicola si limita soltanto a presentare il mondo politico in modo leggero ed ironico, quasi a volerlo sbeffeggiare nel meccanismo basato su scambi di favori e di elettorato ma non va oltre. Si tende a mantenere un tono corretto e un poco velato sentimento filo-americano. Il film sembra dire: quanto sono bravi gli americani che liberano il popolo dall'appressore, fornendo armi per difendersi. Le stesse armi che poi verranno utilizzate 10 anni dopo contro gli stessi americani i quali, guarda caso, muovono guerra proprio contro quello stato che - prima della caduta del muro di berlino - avevano appoggiato. Ironia della sorte. L'ultima osservazione che fa Wilson, deve far riflettere; dopo aver raccolto 1 miliardo di dollari nella causa afghana, sotto consiglio di Gust, chiede alla Commissione lo stanziamento dell'ultimo milione di dollari per la ricostruzione delle scuole, dice (se ricordo bene) : "Gli stati uniti fanno sempre così, aiutano un popolo in difficoltà, gli danno le armi e poi se ne vanno, lasciando quello che le loro armi hanno creato ". E la tv ci ha insegnato che effettivamente le cose vanno così. Film senza infamia e senza lode, più un film politico che commedia classica, da vedere almeno per farsi un'idea di come le istituzioni gestiscono certi affari. Prima però una ripassatina del periodo storico trattato non farebbe male, giusto per ricordarsi chi governava cosa.
Consigliato ai fan di Philip Seymour Hoffman, a chi ama le pellicole "impegnate" ma che una sera vuole concedersi uno svago e a tutti coloro che tra Raul Bova e Nanni Moretti non sanno decidersi. Sconsigliato ai fan di Julia Roberts (non vorrei che si spaventino).
Piccolissima curiosità gossippara personale: ma Thom Hanks è proprio così o s'è fatto una qualche plastica alla faccia? Quando sorride si gonfia tutto, sembra Bud Spencer, gli avranno riempito le guance di botox? Mah...roba che photoshop s'indigna.

Il vero racconto di una delle più importanti operazioni segrete della storia ad opera del deputato texano Charlie Wilson (Tom Hanks). Dotato di una mente furba, grandi capacità dialettiche e di un forte sentimento patriottico, Wilson, riuscì attraverso un'improbabile alleanza tra il Mossad israeliano, l'Egitto e il Pakistan a fornire, a spese degli Stati Uniti cannoni e lancia missili all’Afghanistan, sotto attacco da parte dei russi durante gli anni ’80. Appoggiato dalla ultramilionaria Joanne Herring (Julia Roberts), anticomunista e amante di Wilson, e dal rozzo ma ingegnoso agente dell’FBI Gust Arrakotos (Philip Seymour Hoffman), ripagò con la stessa moneta i russi, colpevoli di aver aiutato finanziariamente i Vietcong durante la guerra del Vietnam, facendo trionfare gli afgani e costringendo i soldati marxisti a firmare la Pace di Ginevra, il 14 aprile 1988.
Mike Nichols, affiancato dall’esperto scenografo Aaron Sorkin, pone un’immagine patriottica e trionfatrice degli USA, a differenza del collega Robert Redford, che con il recente “Leoni per Agnelli”, ha dato un ritratto negativo della sua nazione, impegnata nella “catastrofica” guerra in Afghanistan e Iraq. Entrambi, però, sembrano essere d’accordo sull’ignoranza e sull’inefficienza delle istituzioni (CIA e Congresso), colpevoli di portare avanti progetti sconclusionati, non considerando quelli aventi maggiore importanza per il bene comune. Di queste dichiarazioni ne è testimonianza una delle scena conclusive del film: Wilson, discutendo con il Congresso sulla tanto voluta sconfitta russa, richiede una minima somma di denaro rispetto a quella spesa nel finanziare gli armamenti afghani, per far costruire una scuola a Bagdad indirizzando allo studio i bambini usciti da una violenta guerra. Senza mezzi termini il Congresso si rifiuta categoricamente, non mostrando alcun interesse per le persone più bisognose.
Nel complesso il film mi è piaciuto. L’ho trovato interessante e molto attinente alla realtà storica grazie all’inserimento di videoregistrazioni sulla guerra russo- afgana, crude ma efficaci.

spiller den fargerike kongressmannen fra Texas, Charlie Wilson, som etter et besøk i det sovjetisk invaderte Afghanistan tidlig i 1980-årene starter opp en operasjon for å hjelpe afghanerne til å beseire Sovjet. Med seg på laget får han den vakre og rike Joanne Herring () og en slu rev av en CIA-agent med gresk opphav i Gust Avrakotos (). Ved hjelp av viktige allierte i Midt-Østen, klarte Wilson & co. å samle inn penger nok til å forsyne afghanske frihetskjempere med tilstrekkelig våpen slik at de sovjetiske styrkene i 1989 trakk seg ut av landet.
Mot slutten understrekes imidlertid konsekvensene av dette, som peker frem til dagens situasjon med Taliban. For mens i første rekke er en finurlig miks av et historisk spenningsdrama og en fengslende moderne biografi, er den også en satirisk oppvekker som både antyder og peker på hvilke feil som er blitt gjort, og som amerikanerne er i ferd med å gjøre igjen i Afghanistan.
Med manus skrevet av Aaron Sorkin får jeg automatisk forventninger til rask og smart dialogveksling med en lang rekke fornøyelig formulerte observasjoner. De som har sett (eller for så vidt også ) kjenner stilen, vel vitende om at dette er en adapsjon av den avdøde fjernsynsdokumentaristen beretninger i boks form.
Det er altså i dialogen Sorkins ekspertise ligger, og den er også (til tider) knakende god i . Men Nichols klarer bare delvis å binde det sammen til en film med et klart uttrykk. Det er underholdende å se Tom Hanks portrettere en Charlie Wilson som en karismastisk kvinnebårer med høy sigarføring på hjemmebane i filmens første akt. Men etter hvert som filmen skrider frem, skifter stemningsbildet frem og tilbake; fra det sarkastiske, til det pompøse, til det manipulerende, til det moraliserende. Samtidig klarer jeg ikke å se noen karakterdybde bak den vittige dialogen, som i en film som dette blir nødvendig for at jeg skal kunne bry meg om det som blir uttrykt utover den rene underholdningsverdien.
Filmen blir kanskje litt for kort (ca 95 minutter) der den hopper av sted fra scene til scene, fra sted til sted, fra stemning til stemning. Det går fort i svingene. Historien om Charlie Wilson, som jeg på forhånd kjente veldig lite til, viser seg jo å være såpass fascinerende at man gjerne kunne brukt mer tid på den når den først blir filmatisert.
Det er absolutt mye bra å hente her, og den stjernespekkede trioen foran kamera leverer som ventet varene (Hoffman er Oscar-nominert). Men jeg føler ikke at filmen henger så godt sammen som den burde, og det er alltid litt skuffende å se en film som ikke helt klarer å oppfylle sitt potensial.

The Only Luxury Resort on Monterey Bayand I believe them! Clark and I were fortunate enough to have host our stay. In the Ocean View Room w/ Balcony - our entire daily rate's total was $1720 ($430 for 4 nights). Rooms generally start at $230 and go up to $3200 a night. also covered our Valet ($20 a day), Internet ($9.95 a day), and Room Service (In-Room Dining) which ours ended up costing about $200 a day totaling at or around $800. So, thanks to and all they did to ensure we enjoyed our time at the in Monterey CA our total trip (would have) cost us a grand total of $2640 for the 4 nights we were there.
Clark and I are very thankful to for unknowingly providing us with the most Romantic (first) Valentines Day of our Marriage and also an AMAZING trip for our (first) 1 year anniversary. The intention of this trip was my husband was the Cinematographer for (Automotive Rhythms) who were spot-lighting the new 2008 and the brand new M1.
The Hotel stay was wonderful. The best way to describe it would be to give the Good, Bad, & the Ugly:
The Good:
You walk into the lobby and you immediately feel like you're on the Titanic! Walking around the halls, patio's and their Ocean-view Balcony's the feeling follows you. It's amazing!
WONDERFUL customer service. The Room Service (In-Room Dining) people were beyond kind and considerate, both on the phone and in person. There couldn't have been anything more they could have done to serve you. They most definitely go the extra mile. Valet was very kind and were always there to open your door. The Bell-Men service are very kind and warm in welcoming you and making sure you have a smile when you leave. :)
Flowers! They shower you with flowers everywhere! The Room Service (In-Room Dining) tables always have a fresh vase of flowers and anything delivered to your room has a fresh picked Gardenia flower with it. I loved that!
This Hotel is a walk away from Old Fisherman's Wharf, it's right on Cannery Row so it's surrounded by excellent Restaraunts & The Monterey Aquarium, and it's about a 10 min drive from both Pebble Beach and Carmel by the Sea.
The View! Oh my, if you're at this Hotel you have got to get a Ocean Front View. It is BEAUTIFUL! Half the Hotel is literally on cement stilts so it's right on the water.
The bedding is as soft as a cloud. They provide a Down Comforter, Down feathered Pillows and a Down feathered mattress. I have never slept so good in my life!

The style of the room is filled with warm colors and gives off the ambiance of high-end style. It's not contemporary, but not standard. Think the type of room would stay in vs. a room that a contemporary movie star would stay in.
The type of people who work here are the type of people who want you to leave happy. If you want something, they do not say "I'm sorry, we don't have that." they say, "Yes, we can make/get that for you." I was sick one of the mornings we were here and I didn't see anything on the menu that I could stomach. I asked if they could make me some Chicken Noodle Soup, and without a seconds thought they said "Yes, we'll have that ready and bring it up right away!" How nice!
The Bad:
The Shampoo's, Conditioner's and Lotion Bottle's were small. Maybe they didn't know there were two of us? It's OK, they were more than happy to give us more of those small bottles. :)
Their food was really good... expensive, but worth it for the taste... most of the time. I don't want to gripe much about their food because we weren't the ones paying for it. But, their muffin's tasted like they had extra flour in them and they cook the eggs (I ordered Egg Beater eggs) with butter. I do have to say that we never had a bad Dinner. Breakfast and Lunch were questionable sometimes, but not always. We would have loved to have seen a variety of fish dishes since they are along the coast. But they would have made anything we wanted that wasn't on the menu. It's just for those who don't know that- it could be discouraging sometimes looking at the menu and not always seeing much of a variety. It all depends on how long your stay is and if you're eating in more than eating out.
They don't have wide screen/ flat screen TV's! I found it kind of funny that their TV's were old-school, haha! Clark and I are just used to having quality resolution Television. Clark's all about HD and I have adapted to that taste in Television and Movies. So, that was a bummer to see an Old Fashioned TV in a Ritzy Room.
Clark was annoyed that we couldn't receive the option to park our own car. You HAVE TO Valet it. Again, we weren't paying for the Valet, but we would have liked to park our own car and avoid having to HAVE TO pay them a tip for something we wish we could do ourselves. Clark was also a little peeved that he couldn't open the door for his own wife. They literally lunge in regardless if they see a wife's husband attempt to open his wife's car-door. We're all about paying tips for waiters and services that we choose to commission. But for something that we could easily do ourselves and for a service that we're forced to comply to- it's discouraging to HAVE TO pay a tip.
Their mini bar also includes a refrigerator filled with a variety of non-alcoholic drinks, shelves with treats and other items such as toothpaste and any minor item you may have forgotten to pack - which is all good. The bad thing about the mini-bar is that it's a separate charge on your account if you open anything. A bottle of water is $6.00!!! The same bottle of water you can purchase at a store for $.75 cents! Anything that you find in the mini-bar you might as well order in Room-Service for a less expensive price, but be prepared to pay 19% Gratuity and a $6.00 delivery charge, so then again- don't order it in Room-Service, walk down the street a few blocks and purchase it at the store for 1/16 of the price. :)
The Ugly:
Their internet is on a non-secure network. Clark and I got a Trojan Virus each day that we were there. Not anything that our Anti-Virus software didn't catch and eliminate right away. But their internet would cut-out a few times a day and once a day pop-up with that virus warning.

Overall I would have to say that if you have the money, & you can afford it - this would be my top pick for the Monterey, CA area Hotels! :D
Altra pellicola statunitense che scava nella sordida realtà della politica estera a stelle e strisce, uscita poco dopo il film Leoni per agnelli. Mentre quest'ultima pellicola va a indagare sulla realtà presente e futuribile del conflitto afgano, La guerra di Charlie Wilson indaga invece sulle sue radici. Lo stile è comunque completamente diverso. Mentre Robert Redford nel suo Leoni per agnelli usa uno stile molto convenzionale che in definitiva condanna senza mezzi termini il mondo della politica e dell'informazione, Mike Nichols in questa più recente pellicola usa toni molto più scanzonati, rasentando la commedia. Senza però mai cadere veramente nel grottesco. La politica estera a stelle e strisce ne esce con le ossa rotte, ma, a differenza di Redford, Nichols non si accanisce contro la sua classe politica, che viene dipinta come un insieme di persone comunque pervase da nobili motivazioni, anche se cialtronesche nella gestione pratica dei problemi, specie quando si tratta di guardare al lungo periodo.
Al di là di queste considerazioni ho trovato la visione di questo film piacevole e interessante. E' la storia del deputato statunitense Charlie Wilson, che si trova quasi per caso a difendere la causa afgana contro l'invasione sovietica. All'inizio più interessato alla vita godereccia, questo eclettico uomo politico si appassiona nella difesa degli afgani, specie dopo avere visitato un campo profughi in Pakistan. Superando molte resistenze interne - specie nella cia - riesce rocambolescamente a finanziare e organizzare la resistenza anticomunista, fornendo ai Mujaheddin armamenti moderni per fronteggiare lo strapotere sovietico sul campo di battaglia. Per raggiungere il suo scopo organizza un'improbabile coalizione tra Pakistan, Israele, Egitto, Arabia Saudita e USA, e alla fine l'Armata Rossa viene respinta. Cominciano però subito i problemi, in quanto la Casa Bianca si disinteressa completamente della gestione post-comunista dell'Afghanistan, aprendo di fatto la porta al terrorismo islamico. La fine del film lascia insolute alcune questioni, tra cui prima tra tutte l'omicidio di Zulficar Bhutto, con uno sguardo sul crescente potere dei teocon negli states e l'insoluta questione arabo-israeliana, destinati nel corso degli anni a fare esplodere tutte le contraddizioni di un sitema di gestione del potere basato in fin dei conti sull'improvvisazione e sulla buona volontà di pochi. O almeno così vuole farci credere il regista Mike Nichols.
Un buon film, realizzato senza troppi effetti speciali, basato su una recitazione di alta qualità e su una struttura narrative frizzante e di buon ritmo. Eccellenti i dialoghi. Grande Tom Hanks, brava Julia Roberts.
L'ho visto stasera e mi è veramente piaciuto. Come al solito interpretazione eccellente di Tom Hanks, mi è piaciuta un po' meno quella di Julia Roberts, ma forse dipendeva dal personaggio, abbastanza antipatico a mio avviso..

Según el diario Las Últimas Noticias, la protagonista de "Mujer Bonita" llegó la mañana del martes al aeropuerto de Puerto Montt, a unos 1.000 km al sur de Santiago, donde abordó un avión más pequeño para trasladarse al Parque Pumalín, propiedad de Tompkins.
El diario La Tercera publica "una imagen tomada durante su supuesta llegada al país", explica el rotativo, donde se le aprecia vestida de negro y con su hijo menor, Henry Daniel, en brazos. Se informó además que Roberts fue recibida en la Hacienda Riñihue de Pumalín por el propio Tompkins.
