Sad Endings

I couldn't stop myself from watching 10 Things I Hate About You on the encore love movie channel this weekend even though it made me sad about Heath Ledger's death. I always liked him, at least, as an actor--I've been talking about seeing him at the Joker for months! I don't know if I would have put him on my top 10 list of celebrity crushes. I'm more of a Daniel Day Lewis, Gerard Butler, Jeffrey Dean Morgan type.

In fact, Daniel Day did dedicate his SAG Award to Heath. Daniel Day Lewis is a phenomenal actor and, I am pretty sure, a good person. In the Name of the Father is one of my favorite movies, and I am anxious to see There Will Be Blood. He has yet to let me down. He stays in character for months upon months. That is why there are few of his movies, but all of them are perfect. He has said that it can be difficult to come out of a role. Imagine him as the Joker. I have heard that is a role so dark that it is hard for all who play it to come out of it unchanged.

This weekend, I saw No Country for Old Men. Great movie, disappointing ending. I don't like when movies come to such abrupt endings, even if it is for some kind of effect, somehow making the life of the film more memorable. It's not worth it. I want answers and explanations. These disappointing yet perhaps predictable movie endings--or any endings, for that matter--often make me regret the time spent watching. Of course, in the case of Heath, I will certainly take what I can get, even if it is those few gems, such as Brokeback Mountain, and rom-com chick flicks watched on a Saturday afternoon. So it is not Heath Ledger's end that impressed me, but it is his life, which impressed me for years, and I will miss him in whatever way it is that people miss what they never had.
