Sixteenth Century Now! An Interview.

October 31st, 2007 by admin

For a review of the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, with lots of photos, click here.

Sir Lukas and Lord Connor do battle

The Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire (thereafter to be referred to as the PRF) doesn't just happen because a few hundred people shelled out the cash for costumes. No, it takes a large number of thespians dedicated to being anachronisms. Two such people are John Lukas (Joust Director and Horsemaster as well as "Sir Lukas, the bull of England") and Kevin Stillwell (Equine Stunt Trainer as well as "Lord Connor, Prince of Stockwell"). You can check out their brief bios here. An interview with these fine men will follow after this short digression on how one can become part of the revelry that is the PRF.

There are three levels of performers at the PRF: The Bacchanalians are professional actors; The Black Friars are volunteers, although no less professional or devoted (some have been performing there for a dozen years); and then there are the independent performers hired for only a season.

Auditions for Bacchanalians take place in January, February and March and the selected actors arrive at the grounds in July and for the next six weeks live on the grounds and rehearse six days a week, eight hours a day. By the time the Faire opens in August, they are ready. Read the rest of this entry »

Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens on Halloween

October 31st, 2007 by admin

So where will Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens be on Halloween night and what will they be dressed like? While that is yet to be determined it appears that one of the favorite Halloween costume couples for this season for tweens (and older) will be the couple that are now universally known as Zanessa. So how do you dress up like Troy and Gabriella?

Zac Efron & Vanessa Hudgens on Halloween? (Wenn)
Zac Efron & Vanessa Hudgens on Halloween? (Wenn)

To keep from getting arrested the first move to make is not to pull of a stripped down Vanessa Hudgens bare photo outfit for a costume. But all kidding aside you can really pick any of the looks from Zac and Vanessa as Troy and Gabriella from High School Musical.

Or if you want to go as Zac and Vanessa in real life you'll need to pull off the hair. Zac's patented look for his locks is only going to work on a few guys with blue eyes so if that's not you - don't even try it. And a warning, don't try that weird "Pebbles" (you know from the Flintstones) look that Zac had the other day. Details of that look are here in this article.

If you have thick hair like Vanessa you can basically let it flow down your shoulders with some skinny jeans and a long black top. (see left) OK! Magazine has more tips here that aren't very kind to Zanessa on make up, poses and frosting.

True Romantics from Bollywood

October 31st, 2007 by admin

If you are looking for the old fashioned romantic movies or musicals you should look for Indian film industry (also others than Hindustani films, for instance Tamil and Telugu).  It makes several (thousands) of these every year. Yet the biggest and best known section of this industry is Bollywood film-city in the wings of Mumbai(formerly Bombay), where the most of the Hindustani films are made. Typically Bollywood film posters use Roman alphabets (so called Roman Urdu), because all the audience (also from Middle-East etc.) does not have command in Devanagari script.

The heroines are beautiful and the heroes handsome. There are catchy hit-songs to dance with and the stories are old-fashionably sweet. And if you don't like hot sex, they may please you as it is quite chaste genre. Yet for one used to the western freedom, it may be also disappointing, as there is hardly even kissing scenes, although the dances may be quite provocative. The stories are often inspired by the rich Indian mythology, which is less familiar to the western audience.

The key part of this film genre are music (Filmi) and dance scenes that appear more or less often. They maybe situated in totally different enviroment and be dreamlike, happening in the magical world of lovers. So called "item numbers", cathy songs performed provacitively by sexy actresses, are ofthen even more loosely connected whit the film. Read the rest of this entry »

High School Musical star Zac Efron is sporting a new 'do. His ponytail, WTF is that! He was leaving the gym a couple days ago in Los Angeles.

It does sort of look cute on him...lol, in a weird way though. But besides that ridicules hairdo, Zac sure has an amazing face that no one could ever say anything wrong about!

Newsbits: Olbermann, Nguyen, Asian Health

October 31st, 2007 by admin

Some links and stories from around the web and blogosphere:

Olbermann Slams Malkin for Daring to Question Clinton Straw Donors

MSNBC's Keith "Chicken & Waffles" Olbermann attacked conservative blogger Michelle Malkin for "ethnic profiling" of Chinese restaurant dishwashers in New York City who donated to the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign. Of course, running off of the liberal Media Matters script, Olbermann failed to note that Malkin's problem is not with the donors' ethnicity per se, but that it's highly suspicious when low-wage earners pony up a few thousand to give a political candidate.

'21 Jump Street' star Dustin Nguyen is back in action

Flash back to 1987. "21 Jump Street" was one of the hottest new shows on television, showcasing the talents of young heartthrobs Johnny Depp and Dustin Nguyen. For Depp, already a rising star, it would be a launching pad for enormous big-screen success. For Nguyen, who played Officer Harry Truman Ioki, it was a rare opportunity in the national spotlight during a time when there were hardly any Asian Americans on television or in the movies.

Coverage, Access and Quality | Asian-Americans Express Concern About SCHIP Veto, Program's Future

According to recent U.S. Census Bureau data, 15.5% of Asian-Americans and about 21.7% of Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders are uninsured. Other Asian-American subgroups such as Korean-Americans and Vietnamese-Americans also have a large percentage of uninsured. However, because some subgroups have relatively higher incomes and education levels and are labeled as the "Model Minority," the groups' need for access to health care often is overlooked, the Pacific Citizen/New America Media reports.

The stars were out in full force last night at the Hollywood Film Festival’s 11th Annual Awards Gala which was held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel - and it was John Travolta, Zac Efron and the rest of the cast of musical Hairspray that were celebrating.

Not only did they all receive the prestigious Hollywood Ensemble Acting of the Year Award, but producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron were given the Hollywood Producers of the Year Award as well.

In addition, John Travolta - who dressed in drag for his role in the film - was honored with the Hollywood Supporting Actor of the Year title.

Zac Efron walked away empty handed but the pint-sized star definitely won the award for pretty boy in our eyes.

Other celebrities at the event included Ben and Casey Affleck, Janet Jackson, Chris Judd and Jennifer Connelly among others.

“Before the Devil…” One To Watch For

October 31st, 2007 by admin

New movie releases that only open in New York and LA often get ignored in fly-over states like Minnesota. But if there's a movie to keep on the radar this fall, "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead," sounds like the one.

Reviews such as this one in The New York Times, make me jittery to see this film. Directed by Sidney Lumet, who happens to be an octagenerian (and who also happens to have directed 40-plus movies in the past 50 years), "Before..." is an all-in-the-family crime-gone-wrong story. The trailer sucked me in. The cast includes Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, Marisa Tomei, and Albert Finney to name a few. And yes, Hoffman plays the bad seed...the provoker. His ability with characters such as the one in this movie always make viewers despise him...in a good way.

BTDKYD

Those getting sneak peeks at the film are saying Lumet has hit his prime...in his senior years. If you don't know, Lumet also directed such films as Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon and Prince of The City. "Before the Devil..." may just make him a household name.

Interestingly, several years ago The NY Times ran a piece about Elmore Leonard and his 10 Tips on Writing. In that piece, Leonard suggests that if a writer must provide detailed descriptions about characters, he or she isn't doing his job. Liken that to this line written in The NY Times review of "Before the Devil...":

Andy and Hank are not explained, dissected or excused. They speak their lines and carry out their actions, and, by the time the film is over, we know them inside and out.

Seems like Lumet and Leonard are on the same page.

I'll be seeing this film.

-end-
